Frequently asked questions
All the commonly asked questions about We Smile, our process and our results are answered below. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, just ask us via the chat button on the bottom right.
- 1. Do I need to do anything different to look after my teeth while wearing my invisible aligners?
No you don't. All you need to do is brush and floss your teeth as we recommend. You will also need to rinse your mouth and brush your teeth before putting your invisible aligners back into your mouth after eating.
- 2. When is the best time to whiten my teeth while wearing invisible aligners?
You can whiten your teeth at any time while wearing invisible aligners. Most patients do it however after they have completed their treatment.
- 3. If my gums bleed when I brush my teeth would I still be able to start the treatment?
It is important that your mouth is healthy before you start treatment. Bleeding gums could indicate gingivitis (gum disease) or even periodontitis which affects the jaw bone holding your teeth in place. That is why we ask if you've had a dental check up within 6 months of starting treatment. Alternatively, one of our registered oral hygienists will conduct a dental check in consultation with one our licenced dentists before we take a scan.
- 4. Does a licenced dentist or orthodontist review my case?
Yes. Your case will be reviewed, planned and approved by a licenced dentist or orthodontist who is experienced in invisible aligner treatment.
- 5. Will I be able to talk normally with my invisible aligners in place?
You may have a lisp at first while becoming accustomed to wearing your aligners. Most people adapt quickly though and it is rare that speech is impaired for an extended period of time. You may also experience a temporary increase in salivation or dryness of the mouth.
- 6. If I move overseas can I still straighten my teeth with We Smile?
Yes. We send your aligners to you wherever you are and will be able to monitor your progress through an app. You will also be able to communicate with the dentist or orthodontist that planned your treatment.
- 7. How do I clean my invisible aligners?
Invisible aligners can be cleaned with a toothbrush and cold water or with a non-abrasive toothpaste. Another simple way is to place them into a mixture of cold water and white vinegar every few days for one minute.
- 8. Can I play sport while wearing my invisible aligners?
Yes, as long as its not a contact sport that requires wearing a protective mouthguard. Also, be aware of not drinking sports drinks with them in place as the sugar could stain the plastic.
- 9. Can We Smile help if I previously wore braces and my teeth moved back to their original position?
Yes. A large number of our patients have come to us to correct previous orthodontic relapses.
- 10. Would I need to visit a dentist or orthodontist during my We Smile treatment?
No you will not especially need to visit your dentist during your We Smile treatment, apart from regular dental check-ups and cleanings.
- 11. During treatment would I be able to contact a We Smile dentist with queries?
Yes. You will have direct access to the dentist assigned to you. For general queries or concerns you will also be able to call and speak to one of our hygienists. We want you to have total peace of mind.
- 12. What happens after I complete my invisible aligner treatment?
After treatment we recommend that you wear your custom made retainer to protect your new smile. This is to prevent your teeth from moving back to their original position which can happen if a retainer is not worn.
- 13. How long will it take to receive my new invisible aligners?
It will take up to 21 working days to receive your new invisible aligners once you have approved your treatment plan.
- 14. What are the qualifications of the We Smile team?
All the dentists and orthodontists that are part of our team are licenced and registered with the Dental Board of Australia and are experienced in invisible alignment treatment. We have qualified dental hygienists and registered dental assistants in our scan studios who are trained to take accurate 3D scans of your teeth. Our team receives ongoing training and monitoring so as to be able to answer your questions and guide you through your treatment.
- 15. Why are they called "invisible" aligners?
Because they are transparent and clear. When they are in place on the teeth they are almost invisible and unless someone looks closely are barely noticeable. The aligners that we use are one of the clearest available.
- 16. How do invisible aligners straighten teeth?
Invisible aligners work by making slight adjustments of up to 2mm to straighten your teeth. You will receive a series of invisible aligners as part of your treatment plan that have been designed by one of our licenced dental professionals. As you progress through the series your teeth will move a little closer to your final smile position.
- 17. How long does the average treatment take?
The average treatment time to correct minor to moderate cases is generally 4-6 months, where invisible aligners are changed approximately every two weeks.
- 18. Will I feel pain during my treatment?
As with any orthodontic treatment, your teeth may be tender during the first few days of wearing a new set of aligners. This is normal and is an indication that the treatment is working. If the pain persists please contact us or see your dentist.
